Glossary

·      Masthead: The name of the magazine that is displayed in its designed typeface
·      Dateline: The week/month and year of the publication. It is usually displayed along side the price.
·      Main Image: Usually the biggest image and image relating to the biggest featuring story. It will normally be centred to gain most attention.
·      Model Credit: Credits to models etc. are not usually displayed on the cover.
·      Cover lines: Are lines/ small captions that are on the front of the magazine that relate to stories inside. They are not meant to steal attention from the main image though.
·      Main Cover line: The main cover line is basically the title. It is normally the biggest and is the brightest colour so that it attracts the most attention.
·      Left Third: The left third is the furthest third of the magazine on the left hand side. This is important, especially in western countries as we read left to right, because when magazines are displayed it is usually the first, left hand third, that is on display.
·      Bar Code: the retailers who are selling the magazine mainly use this.
·      Selling Line: This is a short description of the magazines main marketing point that would appeal to their key target market. It normally sets out the magazines ‘editorial philosophy’.
·      Plugs/ Puffs: Extra bits of information/ stories around the magazine ront page that are displayed in a unique/different way e.g. in a shape.
·      USP: Unique Selling Point
·      Institution: Companies and Organisations that provide media content
·      Target Audience: A group of people that a media text is aimed at
·      Representation: A way text portrays groups of people, places and ideas
·      Stereotype: Images usually focus on generalised traits.
